Lyon has 1 arrow left in his quiver
Winnipeg archer can still reach London Olys through team trials
Jay Lyon isn't big on consolation prizes.
Although the Winnipegger failed to qualify for the London 2012 Summer Games at the Canadian archery trials this weekend, the 26-year-old did secure a spot to compete in the upcoming team Olympic trials in Salt Lake City on June 21.
Lyon finished third in Montreal and will be joined in Salt Lake by Crispin Duenas (who placed first) and Patrick Rivest-Bunster, who placed second.
But coming off a fifth-place finish at last year's world championships in Turin -- which secured the Canadian Olympic spot -- and a silver-medal performance at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, a third-place finish at the Canadian trials had Lyon searching for answers.
"Yeah, it's nice to have that second opportunity," said Lyon, who bolted onto the world stage with a 10th-place finish (Canada's highest ever) at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. "But I got the spot for Canada and it should be mine (in London). Then I come here performing ridiculously well and very confident, and to underperform and embarrass myself -- because that's essentially what an athlete in my place would think... And to finish third is even more of a kick in the face."
Still, Lyon has three weeks to prepare for Salt Lake, with a ticket to London still up for grabs.
"There's no sense moping or feeling sorry for myself," he said. "For the first week, I'm going to put my bow in the closet and not even think about it. Then I'm going to beat myself up in the gym and do the things I need to do to get the emotion out and relax.
"Because we're going to need to be nearly perfect in Salt Lake. There's five really good teams (competing for an Olympic berth) and Canada is one of them."
Canada did qualify for the team event in Beijing and finished ninth. All team members are also eligible to take part in the individual competition.
