Manly stages late comeback win to stay in 1st place with 1 round left in National Rugby League

SYDNEY - Forward Tom Symonds scored his second try of the match in the final minute as the Manly Sea Eagles edged Penrith 26-25 to move into first place in the National Rugby League with one regular-season round remaining.

Playing at their home Brookvale Oval, the Sea Eagles trailed for most of the match but started their comeback with a try that reduced the deficit to 24-18 with 15 minutes left before Symonds' late heroics.

The result left Manly in front by two points over South Sydney and the Sydney Roosters, and four points over the fourth-place Panthers.

In the other match Sunday, the New Zealand Warriors kept their top-eight playoff hopes alive with a 42-0 win over the Gold Coast Titans.

The Sea Eagles will close out the regular season when they play North Queensland at the Cowboys' home stadium in Townsville next weekend.

The defending champion Roosters beat Melbourne 24-12. A late Lote Tuqiri try and an Adam Reynolds field goal gave South Sydney its 21-14 win over the Canterbury Bulldogs.

Brisbane led by 20 points and held on for a 30-22 win over St. George Illawarra. The victory ensures the Broncos go to Melbourne next week knowing a win could seal a finals berth.

It was Brisbane's third win in a row at home.

"It's simple now," Broncos coach Anthony Griffin said. "We've been in this boat for four or five weeks. If we get an opportunity, which I hope we do, I'm sure we'll have a good game of football in us."

Canberra beat West Tigers 27-12 and Newcastle defeated Parramatta 42-12.

North Queensland plays Cronulla on Monday to close out the penultimate regular-season round. The Sharks have been hit by bans to 12 current or former players over the use of illegal supplements in 2011 and will likely finish in 16th and last place this season.
