QUARTERBACK Ryan Marsch made it official on Thursday by signing his letter of intent with the University of Manitoba football team.

Marsch will join the Bisons with his eye on the starting job for the 2012 season. He played with the Winnipeg Rifles junior team last season and was the Canadian Junior Football League's most outstanding offensive player. He set a CJFL passing record with 3,030 yards.

"It's a great program with Brian Dobie (as head) coach, he's done a fantastic job already and I just hope I can be that missing piece to start the road to the Vanier," Marsch, 20, said at a press conference where he also received his No. 12 jersey, the number he has worn throughout his career.

Pistons' Franczyk

brings home bacon

DEFENCEMAN Matt Franczyk of the Steinbach Pistons has been named the MJHL's Manitoba Pork Peak Performer of the Month for January.

The award recognizes a player who contributes both on the ice and in the community.

Franczyk has been working with a Steinbach squirt team this season with skill development.

"In the neighbourhood where Matt lives in Steinbach, he's helped open a neighbourhood outdoor rink for kids to play on and have fun with hockey," MJHL commissioner Kim Davis said in a statement.

Franczyk also visited several local elementary schools where he worked with students during a math initiative.
