New South Wales ends 8-year win streak by Queensland in State of Origin series

  • Print

SYDNEY - Trent Hodkinson scored the only try of the match in the 72nd minute to give New South Wales a 6-4 win over Queensland and end the Maroons' eight-year winning streak in State of Origin rugby league on Wednesday.

New South Wales, which won the first match 12-8 at Brisbane, levelled the match on Hodkinson's try and took the lead when he slotted the conversion before 84,241 fans at the former Olympic stadium.

Queensland led 4-0 at halftime on two penalty kicks by Johnathan Thurston, enabling Thurston to eclipse Maroons coach Mal Meninga's Origin point-scoring record of 161.

The third, now meaningless, match in the series is on July 9 in Brisbane.
