NHL sees Quebec labour ruling as a victory

MONTREAL -- The Quebec Labour Relations Board has turned down a request for a temporary injunction against a potential NHL lockout in Quebec.

But the board also ruled Friday that more hearings are needed to make a final decision on a request by 16 members of the Montreal Canadiens and the NHL Players' Association to declare a lockout illegal in the province.

No date was set for further hearings.

With the ruling, Canadiens players will be locked out with their colleagues on the NHL's 29 other clubs if a work stoppage goes ahead on schedule for just before midnight today.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly saw the decision by the labour board as a victory for the league.

"We are pleased but not surprised with the Quebec Labour Board's ruling that any lockout of players will be effective on a league-wide basis, including in Quebec," Daly said in a statement. "And we are extremely appreciative of the expeditious and decisive manner in which the matter was handled."

The NHLPA and players from the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers have also asked the Alberta Labour Relations Board to declare a lockout illegal in that province. A hearing is set for Sept. 21, the day NHL training camps were scheduled to open.

Howling wind delays play

HOYLAKE, England -- Play was called off for the day at the Women's British Open on Friday because of strong wind that disrupted the second round so badly that organizers declared early scores "null and void."

With wind gusting to 60 mph at Royal Liverpool, players struggled to keep the ball on the tees and greens. Play was suspended at 8:25 a.m. with 36 players on the course and the round was called off at 2 p.m.

"I think it's only the right thing to do," Norwegian star Suzann Pettersen said. "The conditions were unreasonable. ... I don't think from the players' perspective that there was any other outcome. It wasn't just unfair conditions. It was unplayable. "

England's Felicity Johnson started with a quintuple-bogey 9. American Cristie Kerr's ball blew off the 12th tee three times. Co-leader So Yeon Ryu bogeyed her only hole, the 10th, before play was stopped.

Jets' Revis out of action

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets will face the Pittsburgh Steelers' speedy receivers without Darrelle Revis.

The All-Pro cornerback was ruled out Friday for the team's game at Pittsburgh on Sunday with a concussion that left Revis "in a fog" after the injury occurred in the season opener against Buffalo.

Coach Rex Ryan said Revis was cleared for non-contact practice for the first time Friday, but will not travel to Pittsburgh with the team today.
