Norway ski federation blasts Swedish TV's doping allegations against Norwegian skiers

STOCKHOLM - Norway's ski federation has strongly criticized a Swedish TV report that cast doping suspicions against eight-time Olympic champion Bjoern Daehlie and other cross-country skiers.

Broadcaster SVT said it had obtained confidential results of blood tests taken at races in the mid-1990's showing the hemoglobin values of several skiers, including Daehlie, Italy's Silvio Fauner and Sweden's Lars Haland, were abnormally high. All denied doping in the program.

Such results can point to possible cheating but are not classified as doping tests.

Norway's ski federation called the accusations unfounded and Daehlie — a national icon in his country — said he didn't rule out taking legal action against the program.

The International Olympic Committee's top anti-doping official, Arne Ljungqvist, also dismissed the allegations Thursday, saying the test results cited were inconclusive.
