Norway's Johaug outclasses field to win 30k mass start World Cup race

OSLO - Norway's Therese Johaug won a women's 30-kilometre mass start freestyle World Cup race before a delirious home crowd on Sunday.

Johaug, 24, finished in a time of 1 hour, 21 minutes and 17.7 seconds in a dominating performance. The home favourite pushed her leading margin from 27 seconds to 48 seconds between the 10k and 12k marks, and then to 1:32 after 24 kilometres.

Runnerup and World Cup champion Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland later closed the gap to finish second, 46.6 seconds behind.

Yulia Tshekaleva of Russia was third, 51.9 seconds behind. The result has no bearing on the World Cup standings after Kowalczyk already clinched the title. The Polish skier has 1,858 points, with Johaug second on 1,197.
