On the Home Front
-- GOALTENDER Amanda Schubert led the Winnipeg Avros to the championship title at the Westman Wildcats Spring Classic tournament in Brandon last weekend and has been named the Selkirk Keystone Source for Sports-Reebok player of the week in the Manitoba Female (AAA) Midget Hockey League.
-- SHAWN Pachet of the Winnipeg Wild, Pembina Valley Hawks captain Reid Burak and Winnipeg Wild goalie Ty Edmonds have been named the players of the month for February in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League. Edmonds was also named the goaltender of the month after he allowed only two goals in three games with a .067 goals against average.
-- THREE local university curling teams have qualified for the 2012 University Curling Championship at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont. on March 14-18.
The teams earned the nationals berths after competing last weekend at Curl Manitoba's 2012 Western Canadian Curling Championship at the Wildewood Curling Club in Winnipeg.
On the men's side, the qualifiers were the U of M team of Travis Bale, Curtis Bale, Kelly Fordyce, Derek Blanchard and coach Rheal Fillion along with the U of W team of Joshua Drews, Nicholas Drews, Jake Zelenewich, Andrew Ferguson, Daniel Birchard and coach Len Komyshyn. On the women's side, the U of M team headed to nationals includes Alyssa Vandepoele, Heather Maxted, Sheyna Andries, Melanie Hunt, Krysten Karwacki and coach Bob Andries.
-- GUARD Kerri Kuzbyt of the Sisler Spartans varsity girls' basketball team and Amy Agnew of the Morden Thunder Curling girls' team have been named the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association athletes of the week.
-- A record-setting swimmer and a power-hitting volleyball player are the University of Manitoba Bisons-Smitty's athletes of the week.
Rookie swimmer Luella Ocon broke a 13-year-old Bisons record in the 100-metres breaststroke with a time of one minute and 11.68 seconds at the 2012 Western Championship at the Pan Am Pool last weekend. Voth, a fourth-year left-side player, has 22 kills last weekend in the Bisons' home-court sweep of the Okanagan Heat to win the best-of-three quarter-final series 2-0 and qualify for the 2012 national championship on March 2-4 at Queen's University.
-- TYLER Noseworthy of the Dauphin Kings has been selected as the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's player of the week after he recorded seven points last week.
In other league news, Jayson Argue of Swan Valley Stampeders was named the MJHL goaltender of the year. Defenceman Tanner Jago of the Winkler Flyers has been chosen as the MJHL's rookie of the year.
-- THE WSA Winnipeg soccer team, which plays in the Premier Development League, has announced its 2012 season will open on May 12 in Colorado and its home opener will be May 19 against the St. Louis Lions at the WSF Indoor Soccer Complex.
