Gryphons state case as lacrosse playoffs loom
THE Manitoba Gryphons are arguably the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League's hottest club as the playoffs draw near.
The Gryphons knocked off the Saskatchewan SWAT twice on the weekend in Oakbank and have pushed their winning streak to five games. They have won eight of their last nine and will face the Calgary Shamrocks this coming weekend in Alberta in a best-of-three series.
The Gryphons knocked off the SWAT 13-9 on Saturday and followed that up with a 15-11 win on Sunday. Brandon Stuebing paced the Gryphons with five goals and one assist on Sunday while Paul Nicholson added four goals and three assists. Evan Faris and Dax Burtniak both scored twice with singles by Garrett Malkowich and Tanner Singleton.
Juniors impress in Spain
CANADA'S athletics team recorded two top-8 finishes in the final day of competition at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain -- and a Winnipegger played a big part in that success.
The girls 4x400-metre relay team -- which includes Julia Zrinyi of Winnipeg -- finished sixth with a time of 3:37.84.
Hope for next season
WSA Winnipeg wrapped up its second season in the Premier Development League with a bang, knocking off the Springfield Demize 6-3 on the weekend at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.
Moses Danto paced Winnipeg with a hat trick while Ali Musse had a pair. Omar Amador had the other on a penalty. Danto also had two goals in Winnipeg's 2-1 win over Springfield on Friday night.
The Wolfpack finished their second season at 3-8-5, good for sixth place in the PDL's Heartland Division.
Gold for Pischke
WINNIPEG'S Taylor Pischke teamed up with Melissa Humana-Paredes to capture gold at the Vancouver Open Pro-Beach Volleyball Tournament on the weekend at Kits Beach.
The Pischke/Humana-Paredes pair knocked off their opponents 21-18, 16-21, 15-13 in the final.
Pischke is a former star at Fort Richmond Collegiate.
