Tricia Mayba and Ryan Munt get the nod this week as the Smitty's Bison Sports female and male athletes of the week.
Mayba, a fourth-year middle player had a solid weekend for the No. 4-ranked University of Manitoba Bisons women's volleyball team during a road sweep of the Saskatchewan Huskies on Jan. 14-15. In the two matches, she had 24 kills, 14 total blocks and seven digs
Also a fourth-year player, Munt -- who plays left side/libero -- shone for the Bison men as they also swept the Huskies. He had 24 kills and 16 digs over the two games.
OCN Blizzard goaltender Matt Krahn is the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's player of the week. Krahn posted a 2-0 record last week, allowing only three goals on 64 shots. He also leads all MJHL goaltenders in GAA with a sparkling 2.09.
Fifth-year guard Catie Gooch led the University of Winnipeg Wesmen to a two-game sweep over Victoria Vikes on the weekend on the West Coast, and was rewarded with the Pizza Hotline Wesmen female athlete of the week award. On Friday Gooch scored a game-high 20 points, while over the two games she had 37 points.
The male athlete of the week is Benny Iko. In the first game of a pair of losses to the Vikes, Iko had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Over both games he collected 24 points and 22 rebounds.
Amanda Schubert of the Garden City Fighting Gophers is the CTV Division A athlete of the week in the Winnipeg Women's High School Hockey League. Schubert stopped 53 shots in a hard-fought 2-1 loss against Westwood. Later in the week, she stopped 40 shots to beat the Sanford Sabres 5-3.
The Winnipeg Free Press Division B athlete of the week is Vanessa Carriere of the St. James Jimmies, who played an outstanding game against the John Taylor Pipers, scoring a goal in a 3-3 tie.
Tyler McGurry of the Springfield Sabres hockey team is this week's Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School athlete of the week.
This 6-foot-1 forward lead his team to victory at the Motor City Invitational in Detroit, and was named to the WHSHL Elite team and currently has six goals and eight assists in 17 games this season.
Jana Scott of the Boissevain Broncos basketball team, is the Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week. A 5-foot-10 forward, Scott led her team to a pair of tournament victories this year. She was named MVP at the Boissevain Invitational and an all-star at the Teulon invitational.
Jeff Maxwell of Elton Collegiate is the HARV-AL SPORTS Rural Coach of the Month for December.
Maxwell has been coaching volleyball for more than a decade at Elton Collegiate. With the boys' program, he has won two AA provincial championships. He took over the girls' program three years ago, and has won the last two AA provincials.
Carey Lasuik of the Daniel McIntyre Maroons basketball team is the Urban Coach. Lasuik has been an integral part of the basketball program for the past 16 years, helping to develop this year's team into one of the top in the province.
The Panthers Gymnastics Club is holding an invitational national, provincial and regional stream gymnastics competition Saturday and Sunday at their club, located at 1016 Marion St.
