Quade Cooper scores try in totalling 18 points as Queensland Reds beat Bulls 23-18 in Super 15
BRISBANE, Australia - Australia flyhalf Quade Cooper scored a try among his 18 points to lead the Queensland Reds to 23-18 win over South Africa's Bulls in Super 15 rugby Saturday.
The Reds led 13-6 at halftime before some anxious moments in the second half. The Bulls looked to have sealed the match when Bjorn Basson crashed over after the siren, only for video replays to show Chris Feauai-Sautia's tackle had forced the winger to put a stray foot into touch.
Wallabies skipper James Horwill returned to the lineup after a near year-long wait on the sidelines with hamstring and ankle problems.
The Reds improved to 4-2 for the season, while the Pretoria-based Bulls lost for the second time in five matches.
Queensland mistakes gave the Bulls three penalties in six minutes, allowing the South Africans to reclaim the lead 15-13 nine minutes into the second half.
But Bulls winger Grenton Mapoe was sin-binned in the 52nd minute for a lifting tackle on prop James Slipper, allowing the Reds to dominate play for the next 10 minutes.
Cooper combined with halves partner Will Genia to exploit the one-man advantage on the left edge and cross a minute later to establish a 20-15 lead.
Genia set up the halftime lead when he inspired phase after phase before Cooper set up Jono Lance with just minutes left on the clock.
