Sherman, Demski, Coombs earn All-Canadian honours

A trio of dominant, game-changing University of Manitoba footballers have earned spots on the 2012 CIS all-star teams.

Teague Sherman, a safety, and kick returner Nic Demski were selected as CIS First Team All-Canadians while running back Anthony Coombs was named to the CIS Second Team. All three players also earned CIS All-Canadian recognition in 2011.

The 24-year-old Sherman finished his five-year career with the Bisons in style, leading Canada West in tackles per game after playing in six of eight contests. Overall, he registered 45 tackles and forced two fumbles.

Demski, still just 18, was a Second Team All-Canadian last season and in 2012 was second in Canada West and fifth in CIS in punt return average (12.1 yards) and second in the conference and fourth in CIS in kick return average (24.2). He also added a 98-yard punt return for a TD.

The 20-year-old Coombs was also a First Team All-Canadian last season at running back. He finished this year with nine TDs -- tied for first in Canada West -- and fourth overall in the CIS. He was second in Canada West and eighth in CIS rushing average per game (93.8 yards) and fourth overall in Canada West (17th in CIS) at 563 rushing yards.

The Bisons finished 4-4 in the regular season, advancing to a the playoffs for the first time since 2007 before being eliminated by Calgary in the playoffs.

Over the last eight seasons, 15 Manitoba football players have been selected CIS All-Canadians.

Love returns for T-wolves

MINNEAPOLIS -- Kevin Love sure knows how to make an entrance.

His banged-up Minnesota Timberwolves never needing him more, Love made a surprise return to the starting lineup on Wednesday against Denver, nearly two weeks ahead of the rehabilitation schedule set for his broken right hand.

The all-star and Olympic gold medallist 's injury was announced on Oct. 18, two weeks before the team opened its most promising season in years.

Jockey Dettori suspended

PARIS -- Frankie Dettori was temporarily suspended from racing in France on Wednesday following a positive drug test, and the British-based jockey will not ride anywhere else or make any comment until his next hearing is concluded.

Dettori, one of the world's best known riders, tested positive for an unidentified banned substance on Sept. 16 after riding at Longchamp.

The French association's medical committee, which held a hearing into the case Tuesday, said it was temporarily suspending the Italian "based on medical grounds."
