Springboks captain Jean de Villiers withdrawn from squad with knee problem

  • Print

CAPE TOWN, South Africa - Springboks captain Jean de Villiers has been withdrawn from the national squad's pre-season training camp because of a knee problem.

The South African Rugby Union says de Villiers will have a medical procedure on Sunday to discover the extent of the injury. SARU says it's unclear how long the centre will be out for.

De Villiers was due to return from injury to play for the Cape Town-based Stormers against the Cheetahs in Super Rugby on Saturday but was a late withdrawal after experiencing discomfort in his knee.

South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer picked a 36-man preliminary squad for the Springboks' first training camp of the year in Durban starting Sunday.

South Africa hosts a World XV, two tests against Wales and one against Scotland next month.
