St-Pierre-Silva super fight coming closer to fruition

TORONTO -- UFC boss Dana White says should Georges St-Pierre defeat Carlos Condit, the Canadian mixed martial arts star will likely take on middleweight champion Anderson Silva next.

"I think we're pretty close," White said of the proposed super-fight between the two champions. "If Georges St-Pierre beats Condit, that could be the next fight."

The fight would probably be contested at a catchweight of 180 pounds, between St-Pierre's 170-pound welterweight rank and Silva's 185-pound middleweight division.

"These guys want to fight each other now," White added.

The fight would probably take place in the stadium that is home to the Dallas Cowboys.

Silva and St-Pierre are considered perhaps the top two pound-for-pound MMA fighters in the world.

The 37-year-old Silva (30-4) has not lost in 15 fights in the UFC.

The 31-year-old St-Pierre (22-2) has not fought this year because of a knee injury but was recently given a clean bill of health and is expected to meet Condit, the interim title holder, later this year.

Canada edges past U.S. squad

at U18 world baseball event

SEOUL, South Korea -- Nathan DeSouza hit an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning as Canada beat the United States 1-0 Wednesday in second-round action at the IBAF Under-18 World Baseball Championship.

Canada began the tenth with runners on first and second base due to the international tie-break rules. After Jacob Robson delivered a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and the U.S. decided to load the bases, DeSouza, from Milton, Ont., came up with a single to the left side.

"I was just trying to make contact and put the ball in play," DeSouza said. "I got a good pitch to hit and put a good swing on it."

Closer Dayton Dawe of London, Ont., came on in the bottom of the ninth to shut the door. Though he didn't figure into the decision, starter Ryan Kellogg of Whitby, Ont., was excellent for Canada (2-1), throwing 8 2/3 shutout innings.

"Tonight was probably the longest and best game I have ever pitched," Kellogg said. "The biggest key for me was keeping their hitters off-balance."

Canada will face Colombia today.
