State to sue NCAA over Sandusky sanctions

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Gov. Tom Corbett said Tuesday he plans to sue the NCAA in federal court over stiff sanctions imposed against Penn State University in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal.

The Republican governor scheduled a Wednesday news conference on the Penn State campus in State College to announce the filing in U.S. District Court in Harrisburg.

A person associated with the university and knowledgeable about the matter, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the lawsuit had not been filed, told The Associated Press that it is an antitrust action.

The NCAA sanctions, which were agreed to by the university in July, included a $60 million fine that would be used nationally to finance child abuse prevention grants. The sanctions also included a four-year bowl game ban for the university's marquee football program, reduced football scholarships and the forfeiture of 112 wins but didn't include a suspension of the football program, the so-called death penalty.

Tribe inks Myers

CLEVELAND -- Free agent Brett Myers is getting a fresh "start" with the Indians.

The veteran right-hander has agreed to a one-year contract with a club option for 2014 with Cleveland, which will give him a chance to win a starting job after he pitched in relief last season for Houston and the Chicago White Sox. Myers' deal is contingent on the 32-year-old passing a physical.

The Indians have several openings in their rotation with Justin Masterson and Ubaldo Jimenez appearing to be the only locks.

Canada East earns draw

LONDON, Ont. -- Canada East finished atop the round robin at the under-19 world ringette championship Tuesday.

Jennifer Gabel of Nepean, Ont., scored with five seconds left in the final quarter to help Canada East tie Canada West 3-3.

The result means the Canadian sides finished the round robin in a three-way tie for first with Finland, with Canada East holding the tiebreaker.

Canada East trailed 3-1 heading into the fourth quarter before Robin Scott of Mitchell, Ont., scored to set up Gabel's last-second goal.

Canada East will face fourth-place Russia on Wednesday, while Finland and Canada West meet in the other semifinal. The final is scheduled for Thursday.

Woodson back for Pack

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Charles Woodson has been cleared to play again, and the Green Bay Packers are counting on the defensive back to provide a lift in Saturday night's playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Woodson deferred to team physician Dr. Pat McKenzie and gave his broken collarbone as much time to heal as possible, sitting out Sunday's regular-season finale at Minnesota.

He was injured on Oct. 21 and has missed nine consecutive games.
