Victory moves Frenzel towards first overall World Cup title in Nordic combined

LAHTI, Finland - LAHTI, Finland (AP) — Germany's Eric Frenzel took a big step towards his first overall World Cup title in Nordic combined by winning Friday's event at the Lahti Ski Games.

Frenzel finished fourth in the ski jumping, and his 16th place in the 10-kilometre cross country skiing was enough for victory in a combined time of 24 minutes, 48.2 seconds.

France's Jason Lamy-Chappuis, winner of the last three overall World Cups and second in this season's overall standings, could only finish Friday's event in 16th position.

"My skis were really good today, and I felt strong even at a very high pace," Frenzel said. "It was a really good day for me, and at the moment I have a really good position."

With two races left, Frenzel tops the standings with 854 points, against 668 for Lamy-Chappuis. Frenzel has won five of his last six events. Japan's Akito Watabe finished second on Friday,10.1 seconds behind, with his teammate Taihei Kato in third, 12.9 adrift of Frenzel.
