THE Ultimate Fighting Championship's debut in Winnipeg next month will feature a new main event -- and the matchup will be familiar to local fight fans.
UFC Canada confirmed Tuesday that interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao is off the UFC 161 card after tearing ligaments in his right foot during training recently. UFC president Dana White confirmed in a report on MMAJunkie.com that Barao has not been cleared by doctors to compete in his fight, scheduled to be against Eddie Wineland, the No. 4 contender.
As a result, the fight featuring former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans (22-3-1) and PRIDE champion Dan Henderson (29-9) -- initially billed as a co-main event for UFC 161 -- will now be the main event on the June 15 card at the MTS Centre.
There has been no word on whether a new opponent could be found for Wineland on short notice or if another bout would be added to the card.
Another battle of light heavyweights -- former champion Mauricio Rua (21-7) against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (21-5) -- moves to the co-feature spot.
The card will also feature the first-ever UFC women's bantamweight bout in Canada, with Alexis Davis of Port Colborne, Ont. facing Rosi Sexton of Manchester, England.
