With Sochi Olympics year away, Volosozhar-Trankov give Russia 1st world pairs title in 8 years
LONDON, Ont. - Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov completed their perfect season when they won their first pairs title at the world figure skating championships on Friday.
The timing couldn't be better, too. With the Sochi Olympics a year away, it was Russia's first pairs title since 2005.
Volosozhar and Trankov upset four-time world champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany at the European championships, and this was expected to be a rematch. But it wasn't even close. The Russians scored 225.71 points, almost 20 more than the Germans. Canada's Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford won the bronze medal.
