Melbourne Victory 5-0 winners over Newcastle in A-League to move into 3rd place

SYDNEY - Melbourne Victory consolidated its place in the playoff-bound top six of Australia's A-League on Sunday with a 5-0 win over the Newcastle Jets.

Marcos Rojas scored in the eighth and 66th minutes for the Victory, who led 3-0 after 30 minutes. The win moved the club into third place, 11 points inside the current top six with five rounds to play.

Last-place Wellington Phoenix, playing under coach Chris Greenacre of England for the first time, beat Melbourne Heart 1-0 on Sunday, with Jeremy Brockie scoring in the 19th minute.

Greenacre was promoted from assistant when former head coach Ricki Herbert quit last week after leading the team in more than 150 A-League games since its formation six years ago. Herbert will continue as coach of the New Zealand national team.

In earlier 23rd-round play, Labinot Haliti's 81st-minute goal gave the first-year Western Sydney Wanderers a 1-0 away win over Central Coast to supplant the Mariners in first place.

The Wanderers' eighth consecutive win moved the team two points clear of the Mariners, who had maintained first place for 14 consecutive weeks and had not lost at home this season.

Former Juventus star Alessandro Del Piero scored an equalizer from 27 metres in the first half, but his Sydney FC went down 2-1 to Perth Glory. That left Sydney a point out of the top six with five rounds to go.

Substitute Ben Halloran's 82nd-minute goal gave the defending champion Brisbane Roar a 1-0 win over Adelaide United.
