Bisons' Scott named to Team Canada roster

Desiree Scott’s incredible 2011 season has ended on a high note.

The Manitoba Bisons women’s soccer assistant coach was named to the Team Canada 20-player roster that will compete at the 2012 CONCACAF women's Olympic soccer qualifying event, the university announced Wednesday. The qualifier takes place next month (Jan. 19-29) at BC Place in Vancouver.

Eight CONCACAF nations will compete for two available spots to the London 2012 women’s Olympic soccer tournament. Canada is in Group A, joining Costa Rica, Cuba and Haiti, while Group B has USA, Mexico, Guatemala and Dominican Republic.

Scott, 24, has had amazing season on the pitch, representing Canada in three international events.

The Winnipeg product started her year as part of the Canadian women’s soccer team at the 2011 Cyprus Women’s Cup in March. Following that, Scott became the first Manitoba-trained player to participate in the FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany over the summer, playing in two games at the prestigious tournament.

In October, she earned a gold medal as the Canadian women’s soccer club got by Brazil in the final match (1-1; 4-3 in penalty kicks) at the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Scott has also been named a finalist for the 2011 Manitoba Female Athlete of the Year.
