City to host 7 games for 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup

Winnipeg has been awarded seven games for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup of soccer as the official match schedule was unveiled today at a meeting in Zurich, Switzerland.
Local games in the world's largest women's soccer tournament, which will be hosted by Canada on June 6-July 5, 2015, will be played at Winnipeg's new Investors Group Field. Winnipeg will host two games on June 8, two games on June 12, two games on June 15 and one game on June 16. All seven games are group matches, or first-round games, and will not include Canada.
Team Canada will open the 24-team tournament on June 6 at Edmonton.
"We are really excited, we don't know what teams we are going to get but at the end of the day, this is the Women's World Cup of soccer and to be part of the host cities is going to be fantastic for the entire soccer community," said Manitoba Soccer Association executive director Hector Vergara in a telephone interview as he is out of the country. Vergara is a member of Winnipeg's host committee.
Qualification matches matches begin next month but Canada has qualified as the host country and has been placed in the the Group A1 position.
Winnipeg's games include the Group A2 vs. A3 game as well as games in Groups B, C and D.
There will be a total of 52 matches played in six venues including Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Vancouver. The championship match will be played on July 5 at Vancouver's B.C. Place
The 2015 tournament will mark the first time the tournament will include 24 teams from around the world, up from the previous 16.
