U of W introduces soccer teams

The University of Winnipeg officially unveiled its Canadian Interuniversity Sport Wesmen women's and men's soccer programs on Friday.
The U of W teams have joined the CIS after having played the past two seasons in the Manitoba Collegiate Athletic Conference where they won titles both years.
The Wesmen teams will both officially open their seasons on Sept. 7 at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex (Wilkes Ave. and Waverley St.).
The women will meet the U of M at 6 p.m. followed by the men facing the Saskatchewan Huskies at 8 p.m.
Olympic women's soccer bronze medallist Desiree Scott of Winnipeg spoke to the two teams at the press conference and welcomed them to the CIS.
"I was a CIS athlete like you guys so this pretty exciting," said Scott, a former player with the University of Manitoba Bisons women's team who played five CIS seasons and is an assistant coach with the team. "I am so proud to come from Winnipeg and represent my country."
"Staying here was the best choice of my life. I played in the CIS and that's how I got scouted by the national team."
She brought her 2012 London Olympics bronze medal to show the assembled group at the press conference and was received with thunderous applause.
