Winnipeg to host FIFA Women's World Cup

Winnipeg is one of five Canadian cities that will host the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup Soccer.

According to a press release from Mayor Sam Katz's office, Winnipeg will join Vancouver, Edmonton, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton as a host city for the event, which is the largest international women's sporting competition. A total of 24 teams from around the world will compete in 52 matches over a 23-day period in June 2015.

Each selected city will host four teams. The schedule of games will not be announced until December of 2014.

"I’m thrilled that the biggest sport in the world and the biggest womens sporting event in the world is coming to Winnipeg," said Mayor Sam Katz. "A lot of people have worked very hard on this and it will be a great thing for our city."

The FIFA Women's World Cup Soccer is held every four years, and is expected to attract more than one million spectators in Canada and 15 million television views worldwide.
