Ajax beats Go Ahead Eagles 1-0 to take sole lead of Eredivisie as Vitesse draws with NEC

  • Print

AMSTERDAM - Substitute Lasse Schoene fired Ajax to a 1-0 victory at Go Ahead Eagles Deventer on Sunday to give the defending champion a two-point cushion at the top of the Eredivisie.

Schoene fired a free kick into the Deventer wall and then blasted in the rebound in the 74th, 10 minutes after coming on.

Vitesse was second going into the weekend, behind Ajax on goal difference, but dropped points in the title race by drawing 1-1 at home to last-place NEC.

Defender Dan Mori headed Vitesse into the lead from a corner on the half hour but English striker Michael Higdon secured a point for NEC in the 71st minute.

The match between third-placed FC Twente and Groningen was called off due to a frozen pitch.
