Benfica thrashes Gil Vicente 5-0 to stay top in Portuguese league

LISBON, Portugal - Benfica rolled to a 5-0 win over visiting Gil Vicente Sunday to reclaim the lead in the Portuguese league.

FC Porto had moved in front with a victory on Friday, but Benfica answered with a dominating performance after being jeered by its fans for a lacklustre display in a 1-0 win over Bordeaux in the Europa League.

Maxi Pereira scored for Benfica in the 12th minute, his shot deflecting off Gil Vicente defender Luis Martin before crossing the line.

Eduardo Salvio made it 2-0 10 minutes later before Lorenzo Melgarejo scored in the 33rd. Lima scored his 12th goal of the season in the 65th, and Nicolas Gaitan capped the rout in stoppage time.

Benfica and Porto are undefeated after 22 rounds, with Benfica having one more win at 18.
