Canada names roster for upcoming U17 FIFA World Cup in UAE
OTTAWA - Canada has named its roster for the upcoming FIFA U17 World Cup, and it features plenty of homegrown talent.
Eleven of the 21 players selected belong to the academies of one of Canada's three Major League Soccer teams: Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC and Montreal Impact. Three more are in the system of FC Edmonton, which plays in the second-tier North American Soccer League.
Additionally, 16 of the 21 players have spent more than 75 days in Canadian youth program.
"I have belief in our team," said Canadian U17 coach Sean Fleming. "The commitment and dedication from the boys has been fantastic."
The 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup goes from Oct. 17 to Nov. 8 in the United Arab Emirates. Canada's first game is against Austria on Oct. 19.
