LONDON - Chelsea has signed St. Etienne defender Kurt Zouma on a 5 1/2-year contract but he will remain on loan at the French club until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old centre back has made 52 league appearances for the Ligue 1 team and scored four goals.

Zouma has represented France's youth teams and he was part of the group that won the Under-20 World Cup last year.

Chelsea has already signed midfielder Nemanja Matic and winger Mohamed Salah in the January transfer window.
