CSKA Moscow defends fans, denies Man City midfielder Yaya Toure was racially abused
MOSCOW - CSKA Moscow says it considers "accusations of racism to be unfounded" after Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure complained that local fans abused him during a Champions League match.
Toure said he was subjected to racist chanting during City's 2-1 win over CSKA in Moscow on Wednesday.
But CSKA responded Thursday, saying it was "surprised and disappointed" with Toure's statements, and adding "we regret the incident, even though we consider the accusations of racism to be unfounded."
CSKA also quoted Seydou Doumbia, a striker from Ivory Coast who plays for the Russian team, as saying "my Ivory Coast colleague is clearly exaggerating."
