Eibar beats Real Sociedad 1-0 with Javi Lara's goal for winning debut in La Liga

  • Print

BARCELONA, Spain - Eibar's Javi Lara scored a brilliant free kick for a 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the Basque derby and a winning start to the Spanish league on Sunday.

The first goal in the topflight category for Eibar was well worth the 74-year-old wait for the more than 5,000 fans at Ipurua Stadium.

Lara capped his superb first half two minutes before the break by scoring with a free kick from outside of Sociedad's area.

Instead of crossing the ball into the box, the midfielder powered a right-foot strike over the reach of goalkeeper Enaut Zubikarai that rattled the far post before going in the net.

Eibar earned two consecutive promotions in as many years to rise from the third to the first division.
