Honduras pick 2 newcomers, 7 players from European clubs, in World Cup squad

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras - Midfielder Roger Espinoza of Wigan and Wilson Palacios of Stoke are among seven players from European clubs in a Honduras World Cup squad also featuring two newcomers.

Coach Luis Fernando Suarez picked most of the players who helped Honduras qualify for its third World Cup.

His 23-player list has two newcomers from the local league — goalkeeper Luis Lopez and defender Juan Pablo Montes.

Eleven players are back from the team that played in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, including Maynor Figuera of Hull City and Emilio Izaguerre of Celtic.

Honduras is in Group E with France, Switzerland and Ecuador.

The team will travel to the United States to play warm-ups against Turkey, Israel and England before heading to Brazil on June 9.

It debuts against France June 15.

Defenders: Brayan Beckeles (Olimpia), Arnold Peralta (Rangers), Emilio Izaguirre (Celtic), Juan Carlos Garcia (Wigan), Maynor Figueroa (Hull), Victor Bernardez (San Jose Earthquakes), Osman Chavez (Qingdao Jonoon), Juan Pablo Montes (Motagua).

Midfielders: Luis Garrido (Olimpia), Roger Espinoza (Wigan), Jorge Claros (Motagua), Wilson Palacios (Stoke), Oscar Boniek Garcia (Houston Dynamo), Andy Najar (Anderlecht), Mario Martinez (Real Espana), Marvin Chavez (Colorado Rapids).

Forwards: Jerry Bengtson (New England Revolution), Jerry Palacios (Alajuelense), Carlo Costly (Real Espana), Rony Martinez (Real Sociedad).
