MANCHESTER, England - Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has become the second key player this week to sign a new five-year contract with the club, tying the Belgium defender to the English champions until 2019.

Kompany joins David Silva in committing his long-term future to City, three days before the start of its defence of the Premier League title.

The 28-year-old Kompany said Wednesday that "this team is stronger now than it's ever been; we have competition for places in every position and a dressing room full of exceptional, motivated people who want to continue making history together."

Kompany joined City from German side Hamburg in 2008 and has been one of the Premier League's best defenders during his time at Etihad Stadium.
