CARSON, Calif. - Mike Magee scored three times and the Los Angeles Galaxy began the post-David Beckham era with a season-opening 4-0 victory over the Chicago Fire on Sunday.
The two-time defending MLS champions got one goal from Magee in the first half and two more in the second half. Magee volleyed home a deflected cross in the 38th minute, scored from Robbie Keane's feed in the 68th, and knocked in a rebound in the 74th.
It was the Chicago-born Magee's first career hat trick and second multi-goal game in 11 MLS seasons.
Keane scored the finale on an 80th-minute corner kick.
The Galaxy, transitioning to a new style of attack after Beckham's departure to French club Paris Saint-Germain, dictated most of the action in a game played largely between the 18-yard boxes.
PORTLAND TIMBERS 3, NEW YORK RED BULLS 3
PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) — Portland overcame two early goals by Fabian Espindola to forge a draw with New York.
Espindola, a veteran acquired in the off-season from Real Salt Lake, scored in the ninth and 24th minutes, while Jamison Olave, also obtained in the trade with RSL, added a goal in the 28th minute.
Argentine midfielder Diego Valeri scored his first goal for the Timbers. Darlington Nagbe's goal in the second half pulled Portland closer before an own goal that bounced off of Olave in the 83rd minute tied it.
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 0, REAL SALT LAKE 2
SANTA CLARA, California (AP) — Alvaro Saborio scored twice in the final 20 minutes and Real Salt Lake kept defending league MVP Chris Wondolowski off the score sheet.
Saborio broke open a scoreless match in the 71st minute when he outraced two San Jose defenders to reach a pass that Joao Plata looped over the Earthquakes' back line. RSL's leading scorer in each of the last three seasons then finished with a strong right foot from 17 yards, beating San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch to the near post.
RSL got its insurance goal in the 85th minute when Kyle Beckerman — making his 300th career MLS appearance — found Saborio unmarked in the Quakes' box. The Costa Rican international swiveled at 11 yards to tuck a left-footed shot inside the far post.
RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando made two saves for his 100th MLS shutout.
