Newcastle Jets beat 1st-place Brisbane 2-0, prevent Roar from winning 100th A-League match
SYDNEY - Substitute Joey Gibbs scored in the 88th minute to seal the Newcastle Jets' 2-0 victory over Brisbane and prevent the Roar from becoming the first A-League team to win 100 matches.
The first-place Roar weren't helped in the 33rd minute when defender James Donachie deflected an Andrew Hoole cross into his own net.
Newcastle beat the Roar 2-1 on Nov. 17 — Brisbane's last loss. Newcastle has won four of its past five matches against Brisbane.
"We had our chances," Roar coach Mike Mulvey said. "We just weren't incisive enough in the final third."
Newcastle is among several teams on 18 points, six behind Brisbane.
"It keeps us in touch," Jets coach Gary van Egmond said. "You pick up any points (you can) against Brisbane at this moment. There is a lot of belief in our camp."
Defender Storm Roux scored in the 27th minute to give the Central Coast Mariners a 1-0 win over the Wellington Phoenix.
In a Melbourne derby and in the only match Saturday, Mitch Nichols scored two goals as the Victory beat Melbourne Heart 3-1.
The Roar have a five-point lead over second-place Western Sydney. The Wanderers could close the gap when they play Central Coast on Monday, while Wellington hosts Sydney FC and Perth plays Adelaide on Sunday.
Perth will play for the first time under interim coach Kenny Lowe, who replaced Alistair Edwards this week. Edwards' perceived nepotism towards his two sons, Glory players Ryan and Cameron Edwards, caused friction within the team.
Captain Jacob Burns led a player revolt and Burns confronted Edwards after being left on the bench in the team's 2-0 loss to the Victory last weekend.
Edwards, who was fired nine months into a three-year deal, says he plans to take legal action against the club.
