QPR beats Wigan 2-1 after extra time to reach League Championship playoff final at Wembley

  • Print

LONDON - Queens Park Rangers advanced to the League Championship playoff final after coming from behind to beat Wigan 2-1 after extra time Monday.

The win puts Harry Redknapp's team one win away from returning to the Premier League after one season in the second tier, although it must beat Derby at Wembley Stadium on May 24.

Charlie Austin scored twice for QPR in the driving rain, equalizing with a penalty in the 73rd and then knocking in a pass from Bobby Zamora for the winner seven minutes into extra time.

James Perch had given Wigan the lead in the ninth minute from close range. Rob Kiernan nearly equalized in the final minutes but his deflected shot flew just wide.

The first leg had finished 0-0 at Wigan.
