Southampton holds Newcastle to 1-1 draw in feisty Premier League match
NEWCASTLE, England - Jay Rodriguez grabbed Southampton's equalizer in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle on Saturday in a Premier League match that saw the referee accidentally knocked to the ground by a player and a member of each team's coaching staff sent off after a touchline scuffle.
Yoan Gouffran gave the home side a 27th-minute lead and fellow Frenchman Loic Remy passed up two great chances for Newcastle before Rodriguez pounced in the 65th, seconds after Steven Davis hit the post.
Referee Mike Jones required treatment for a bloody nose after being floored by the flailing arm of Newcastle midfielder Moussa Sissoko.
"The ref has got a bloody nose, he is trying to patch himself up for the Christmas party," Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said, jokingly.
"But he took it in good heart, really, I have to say."
And late in the game, the goalkeeping coach from each of the teams — Southampton's Toni Jimenez and Newcastle's Andy Woodman — were sent to the stands after members of the two benches clashed following Morgan Schneiderlin's foul on Newcastle left back Massadio Haidara.
"It's not good for football," Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino said. "From our point of view, we are going to try our best not to let it happen again because it's not good for anyone and not good for the sport.
"I think it is avoidable but also in a high-intensity game such as that, any little spark can lead to something else and I think that's what happened."
The draw lifted Newcastle provisionally to sixth place, three points ahead of eighth-place Southampton.
