Sporting held 0-0 by Academica stay 2nd behind Benfica in Portuguese league

  • Print

LISBON, Portugal - Sporting Lisbon was held to a 0-0 draw by Academica at home on Sunday, missing a chance to join Benfica at the top of the Portuguese league standings.

A victory would have left Sporting joint-top with Benfica after the Portuguese leader slipped to a 1-1 draw at Gil Vicente on Saturday.

But a stubborn Academica held the hosts at their Jose Alvalade Stadium to leave them trailing Benfica, which leads with 40 points to its 38 points.

FC Porto is third with 36 points after losing 1-0 at Maritimo.

Also on Sunday, Belenenses beat Braga 2-1.
