Start of Spain's 2nd division season put on hold amid legal battle with indebted club
MADRID - The Spanish league has delayed the start of the second division season amid its attempt to relegate a club for not complying with financial rules that has reached the courts.
The Spanish league relegated Real Murcia from the second to the third division last week after the club failed to meet new financial requirements, and for its unpaid taxes.
Murcia took its cause to court and won a ruling on Wednesday to stay in the second tier.
The league has responded by suspending the first round of games set to be played on Aug. 23-24 in the hope that the court will revise its decision "in the next 10 days."
The league has not said when the second division will start.
