Striker Nile Ranger leaves Newcastle 'by mutual consent'

NEWCASTLE, England - Newcastle says striker Nile Ranger has left the club with immediate effect.

The Premier League club said Friday in a one-sentence statement that Ranger had "left the club by mutual consent." No reason was given, but the 21-year-old Englishman has previously been involved in legal troubles.

In October, he was convicted of two counts of assault against two police officers, but was told he would not serve any jail time as long as he stayed out of trouble for the next 12 months.

Ranger last played for Newcastle on Jan. 5 in the FA Cup against Brighton.
