Switzerland books ticket for women's World Cup by securing top spot in qualifier
OTTAWA - Switzerland is the first European nation to qualify for next year's women's World Cup.
Switzerland, which has 22 points after seven wins in eight qualifying games, locked up first place in the Group 3 standings Sunday when Denmark and Iceland played to a 1-1 tie.
Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand qualified last month. Canada has a guaranteed spot as the host country.
Other regional qualifiers will be completed throughout the summer and fall.
