Trezeguet scores, helps River Plate move to top of Argentine standings after 5 rounds

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Ex-France international David Trezeguet and Leonardo Ponzio scored first-half goals as River Plate beat Colon 2-1 on Sunday to move into first place in Argentina's first division after five rounds.

Trezeguet scored from close range in the 12th minute and Ponzio increased the lead to 2-0 in the 34th with a right-foot shot from inside the area.

Emmanuel Gigliotti pulled a goal back for Colon in the 75th, but River held on for the win.

Nicolas Castro drove in a right-foot shot from the edge of the area in the 57th minute as Godoy Cruz secured a 1-0 victory on Friday against Independiente to move into second spot, one point behind River, while Boca Juniors drew 1-1 with Atletico de Rafaela.

Atletico de Faraela took the lead against Boca Juniors through Juan Eluchans' 27th-minute penalty. Santiago Silva missed a chance to draw Boca level when he struck the bar from a penalty in first-half stoppage time, but Nicolas Blandi headed in at the far post from Sebastian Palacios' cross to equalize in the 83rd minute.

Tigre edged San Lorenzo 1-0 via a penalty from Ruben Botta on Sunday. On Saturday, Newell's scored three goals in the last half hour via Fabian Munoz, Victor Figueroa and Ignacio Scocco in a 4-2 win over Estudiantes, Union and All Boys had a 1-1 draw, Racing's game against San Martin was suspended with Racing 3-0 up, and Belgrano needed Martin Zapata's second-half injury time goal to beat Velez Sarfield 1-0 .

Bruno Zuculini, Luciano Vietto and Rodrigo De Paul each scored in the first half to put Racing in full control, but the game was suspended by the referee one minute from the end due to crowd disturbances.

On Monday, Lanus playing Arsenal and Argentinos Juniors was due to play Quilmes.
