Zenit wins 6th straight game to start Russian league season; CSKA bounces back with victory
MOSCOW - Russian Premier League leader Zenit St. Petersburg kept up its winning start to the season by beating Lokomotiv Moscow 1-0 Sunday, while reigning champion CSKA Moscow recovered from recent setbacks with an emphatic win.
Zenit has won all six of its league games this season, leaving manager Andre Villas-Boas' team three points clear at the top from Dynamo Moscow.
Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia scored Zenit's winner from a corner, his first goal since signing from Manchester City earlier this month.
Zenit could have scored more if not for poor finishing from Brazilian striker Hulk, while Lokomotiv's former Tottenham forward Roman Pavlyuchenko missed an empty net midway through the first half.
The defeat leaves Lokomotiv eighth with manager Leonid Kuchuk already under pressure after his team missed out on the Europa League on Thursday.
France midfielder Mathieu Valbuena scored his first goal for Dynamo, which sits second in the league after beating FC Krasnodar 2-0. There was a nervy end to the game when Dynamo's Artur Yusupov was sent off on 67 minutes for two yellow cards.
Elsewhere, CSKA bounced back in style from two straight defeats, sweeping aside FC Rostov in a 6-0 home win that sees the reigning champion climb to sixth, six points behind Zenit.
Summer signings scored four of CSKA's goals, as Israeli midfielder Bibras Natcho claimed a hat trick and Finland's Roman Eremenko netted on his debut, while Nigerian forward Ahmed Musa also finished with two goals in a dominant display.
On Saturday, Kuban Krasnodar continued its strong start to the season and occupies third following a 1-0 victory over newly promoted Arsenal Tula. Another surprise package is Chechen team Terek Grozny, now sitting fourth after beating Ural Yekaterinburg 1-0 on Friday.
Nine-time champion Spartak Moscow dropped from second to fifth over the weekend following a 2-0 defeat to Amkar Perm on Saturday. Former Spartak striker Igor Kireev scored Amkar's second goal to defeat his former club.
In other results, a late equalizer meant FC Ufa rescued a 1-1 draw at Rubin Kazan on Sunday, a day after Mordovia Saransk won 1-0 against Torpedo Moscow.
