Happy birthday M1

It is probably the most iconic of BMW sports cars, if not quite the rarest.

The M1 -- the mid-engined two-seater that took BMW from its almost economy car roots to its current status as a master of the sporting automobile -- is 30 years old.

The BMW M1 is still the most revered of the M models BMW has produced. So begins the journey to the M1 Homage, below.

So, as with many automakers these days looking back in time for inspiration for the future, BMW has engineered a tribute to the M1 called the Homage.

Thoroughly modern in the sculpting of its body panels, the M1 Homage is unmistakable as anything else. Its silhouette is almost identical, there are twin M badges on the rear decklid above the twin exhaust pipes and twin kidney-shaped grilles in the front.

No word, yet, however, on what powers the Homage or whether there is any chance it will see production.
