OTTAWA — Census numbers released today show British Columbia residents are seeing their earnings drop despite higher-than-average employment growth in the province.
Median earnings for full-time workers in the province dropped 3.4 per cent to $42,230 from 2000 to 2005.
The drop is even more dramatic over a 25-year span.
From 1980 to 2005, median earnings fell 11.3 per cent in British Columbia.
Statistics Canada analyst Rene Morissette says the decline can partly be attributed to lower wages in the manufacturing sector.
He says other sectors may be dragging down the median earnings but adds it’s not clear which industries are to blame.
Nationally, median earnings grew an anemic 0.1 per cent since 1980.
