IF you're planning a vacation to Canada's east coast, you will want to enter this week's Free Press Travel Section book giveaway contest.
We're giving away two books -- Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, both from Formac Publishing Company Limited.
"This fully updated seventh edition of the Nova Scotia Colourguide offers insider information from local experts on Canada's picturesgue east coast province,'' states the editor. "More than 400 full-colour photographs show off every corner of the province,'' with detailed listings of accommodations, restaurants and events.
The Globe and Mail described the Prince Edward Island guide as "the best introduction to the Island.''
"This guide, compiled by knowledgeable local writers, describes the very best that the Island has to offer, whether you are looking for time on a golf course, a day at the beach, some excitement for the kids or some cycling or hiking,'' states the editor.
Each book is priced at $19.95, but they're yours for free if you are the 26th reader to e-mail the Travel Section at travelcontest@freepress.mb.ca. We'll arrange to have the books delivered to you.
Congratulations to Marty who won last week's travel book, The World's Best Nude Beaches and Resorts.
Spring on a train in the mountains
THIS is new for 2008 -- a Spring on the Skeena tour that features travel on the Skeena's Panorama Dome Car for unsurpassed views of the Rocky and Coastal mountains from its wraparound windows.
There will be more mountain views on a Canadian rail tour than you ever thought possible. This original rail tour, round trip from Winnipeg, is scheduled for Friday, May 16 to Sunday, May 25, 2008, and is priced at $2,925 (per person, based on double occupancy) including hotels.
Relax and enjoy the scenery as the train does all the heavy lifting as you travel across western Canada to the Canadian Rockies of Alberta and the Coastal Mountains of British Columbia, to the city of Prince Rupert and the Pacific Ocean.
The tour includes sightseeing, visits to attractions in Jasper and Prince Rupert, stays at hotels along the way (Jasper three nights, Prince George two nights and Prince Rupert two nights) as well as first-class transportation on two award-winning rail passenger services, VIA Rail Canada's premiere transcontinental The Canadian, and all-daylight, northern British Columbia train The Skeena in Totem Class in the Panorama Dome (including all meals on both trains).
Booking deadline for this tour is March, 28, 2008.
After departing, the tour travels on VIA Rail's Canadian in legendary sleeper car class called Silver & Blue to Jasper in Jasper National Park.
Following a night there, the group will travel on VIA Rail's Skeena in Totem Class, travelling in the Panorama Dome featuring windows that wrap around the roof of the car, fantastic service, great meals and outstanding views of the wildlife and incredible scenery including the Canadian Rockies, the Coastal Mountains and Skeena River during this two-day, all-daylight journey.
Then arrive at the end of the line and Prince Rupert on the Pacific Ocean to enjoy the history, hospitality and charm of this community for two nights and a full day touring the area, visiting the Museum of Northern B.C. and the restored North Pacific Cannery.
We then take VIA's Skeena and return to Jasper National Park to explore this park from the bottom and Maligne Canyon, to the top and the Jasper Tramway, to the summit of Whistler Mountain before returning on VIA's Canadian, again in the Silver & Blue sleeping car class.
