Charter airline Sunwing Airlines is adding more flights and establishing a new seasonal base in Winnipeg to handle a growing volume of sun-vacation travellers.

The Toronto-based airline announced today it will be hiring more than 60 new "crew members" from the local community to staff the new seasonal base here, which will operate out of Winnipeg’s James Richardson International Airport.

It will also be adding weekly flights to Grand Bahamas starting on Jan. 18 and running until the end of March, the company added.

"Due to the overwhelming success Sunwing has experienced in the Winnipeg market, we have decided to further expand our Winnipeg operations and are very excited about the upcoming season," Sunwing president Mark Williams said in a written statement.

Sunwing has been operating from Winnipeg since 2006, when it introduced direct flights to Cancun, Mexico. Since then, it has expanded its offerings to also include direct flights to other popular vacation destinations in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico.

"When airlines do well in our market it’s a win-win situation," said Barry Rempel, president and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority, which operates Richardson International Airport.

"We are pleased to work with quality carriers in enhancing local employment and providing increased non-stop destinations for our region. Sunwing’s flight to Grand Bahama is a great addition to our lineup of winter getaway destinations," Rempel added.
