Detroit museum set to host a series of talks about socially engaged art

DETROIT - A Detroit museum is set to host a series of talks centred around the topic of socially engaged art.

The lecture series at the Detroit Institute of Arts is to begin Thursday with a presentation by anthropologist Arjun Appadurai, who believes art is a powerful tool for social commentary that has the power to spur political and cultural change.

Other speakers will include artist Shirin Neshat and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi.

The series is called "Global Imaginaries, Individual Realities."

It's being presented in conjunction with the upcoming DIA exhibition of Neshat's works, which opens April 7. The lectures are free, but registration is recommended.
