Exhibit of 14th-century Florentine art reveals 'secret history' of paintings

TORONTO - The influential role of artists in Florence at the dawn of the Renaissance is well known, but new research illuminates the ways in which they created their masterpieces, says the Art Gallery on Ontario in Toronto.

The gallery is partnering with the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles to stage an exhibition of over 90 rare paintings, manuscripts, sculptures and stained glass from the 14th century. "Revealing the Early Renaissance: Stories and Secrets in Florentine Art" runs at the AGO from March 16 to June 16.

Experts have recently discovered more about the materials and techniques used by the pioneering Florentine painters, the gallery says.

It plans to set up iPad stations that will let visitors see how infrared technology can reveal a painting's "secret history."

"The exhibition sheds new light on how the artists of the time revolutionized their practices," said Matthew Teitelbaum, AGO director and CEO.

Works by Giotto di Bondone, Puccio Capanna, Bernardo Daddi and Andrea Pisano, drawn from collections in Europe and North America, are among the highlights. Some pieces in the exhibition have never been publicly shown before.
