Yankee Magazine's fall issue offers ideas for planning autumn trips in New England

  • Print

Planning a visit to New England this fall? Yankee Magazine's September-October issue can help you plan your trip.

The magazine, on sale the last week of August, offers ideas for scenic drives, fall festivals and other autumn pursuits, including how to grow a pumpkin 10 times your weight.

For road-trippers, Yankee looks at these routes:

—A 60-mile (100-kilometre) drive through Vermont, from Vergennes to Montpelier, with stops in Bristol, the Appalachian Gap and Mad River Glen.

—Massachusetts' Mohawk Trail, which turns 100 this year and meanders through villages and the Berkshires in the northwestern part of the state.

—A drive along the Sheepscot River in Maine from Wiscasset to North Whitefield, with points of interest at Head Tide Village, Sheepscot General Store at Uncas Farms and Green Hollow Orchard.

—Following the Connecticut River from South Hadley in western Massachusetts across the border to Winchester, New Hampshire.

—A coastal route from the old whaling towns of southeastern Massachusetts starting in New Bedford to Tiverton Four Corners in Rhode Island.

—A drive through northwestern Connecticut from Granby to Goshen.

The magazine also looks at five pumpkin festivals. East Hampton, Connecticut, becomes Pumpkintown USA daily Sept. 21-Oct. 31. Vermont's Pumpkin Chuckin' Festival at Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa takes place Sept. 28. Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island, features 5,000 illuminated pumpkins nightly, Oct. 2- Nov. 2. The Damariscotta Pumpkinfest, including pumpkinboat regatta, is held Oct. 10-13 in Maine. And the Keene, New Hampshire, Pumpkin Festival is scheduled for Oct. 18.

In addition, Yankee offers a live fall foliage map at YankeeFoliage.com, along with a trip-planning tool that predicts the level of autumn colour for any date and destination in New England. Yankee also offers a mobile app at YankeeFoliage.com/LeafPeepr. Ideas for 24 scenic road trips are at YankeeFoliage.com/Drives.

The magazine sponsors a best fall photo contest as well at YankeeFoliage.com/Contests. The winner will be published in next year's fall issue.

Finally, you can join Yankee's foliage fanatic community on Facebook.com on the YankeeFoliage page.
