FRANKFURT - Only an hour into his new job, Germany's new football federation president has figured out how his country will win this summer's European Championships.
Wolfgang Niersbach believes a routine penalty shootout win over England would leave the final a mere formality for Germany.
Niersbach says Germany will need a pinch of luck to claim its first major title since 1996, but he tells the dapd news agency, "I dare say that if we beat England on penalties in the semifinal, then we'll also be European Champions."
While clearly joking, the new DFB president can be forgiven for his confidence.
Germany beat old rival England on penalties at the 1990 World Cup and again at Euro 96 — both times going on to win the title.
