Privacy of 65 Newfoundland patients breached after employee briefcases stolen

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Newfoundland's largest health board says the privacy of 65 patients has been breached after the briefcases of two employees were stolen in two separate incidents last week.

Eastern Health says a briefcase containing information about two patients was stolen from an employee's vehicle on April 16.

The health board says the briefcase has been recovered and the two people were advised of the incident.

Eastern Health says a day after that incident, the briefcase of another employee that was left in an unattended vehicle for about 10 minutes was taken.

The briefcase, which hasn't been recovered, contained one patient's chart and a notebook with the personal health information of 62 other patients.

Vickie Kaminski, Eastern Health's CEO, says she apologizes to the people affected and regrets what happened.

She says Eastern Health has identified the patients involved in the most recent theft and has contacted most of them.

The province's privacy commissioner has also been notified.
